The Bayeux Tapestry
This is a 1000 year old piece of cloth, 70m long, embroidered with a graphic novel depicting the conquering of William the Conqueror of the English throne. I implore you to please peruse it here
The above website has intervals 1-59 which I will use to highlight interesting moments:
- 1: First up we have a lovely colourful, grand castle.
- 1:Second, how large Edward the Confessor is compared to his little faithful men - we open with Edward in his respectable royal Largeness, telling Harold and ?somebody else to go and let William of Normandy know that he is all good to come have the throne. He is just so large.
- 2: I was surprised to see the popularity of mustaches here!! No one is safe from copying Australian boys.
- 4: Banquet scene - I would love to see what sort of structure this is referencing - a raised gazebo?
- 4: Taking their pantaloons off to wade out to the ship - excellent. Sexy. Masculine.
- 5: Child up the mast!
- 9-10: look to the lower border to see some farming scenes
- 10:Necessary mention of the person with dwarfism expertly commanding a horse from mid-air.
- 11: lower border again: a man fighting a ?chained bear?. What is the cultural significance??!?!?
- 15: We dont know who this woman is or why her face is being ?touched/?hit by that man but Im sure it was scandalous. There is a naked man doing a wide squat down below.
- 22: Yippee!!!!!
- 25-28: Enourmous Edward is back and then he dies twice in a row
- 28-the end HISTORIC VIOLENCE AND LIVES ENSUE OKAY WE GET IT ITS A COOL TAPESTRY
